APM Terminals Opening
Container Ballet In The Port Of Rotterdam

Technical Production. Event Production. Research & Development.

A choreography of sea containers: for the opening of the new container terminal at the APM Terminals Maasvlakte 2 in the port of Rotterdam, director Piet-Harm Sterk (BIND) came up with the idea to use the containers to their full potential and let the terminal open itself. In close collaboration with BIND who contracted us, JUR contributed to the design and execution of the opening show.

This was no ordinary operation, especially because the terminal wasn’t fully built at the time we started developing. With members of APMT we formed a technical production team. Together we figured out a tightly coordinated choreography with the terminal cranes and reinforced containers equipped with LED screens. Special software was written to establish a connection between our media server and the newly developed terminal mainframe.

The event, in celebration of the opening, was attended by the Dutch King (Willem Alexander) and 500 representatives of some of the most important players in the ports industry, and of governments from all parts of the world. The new terminal is the most technologically advanced and most sustainable container terminal in the world.
